Year 8 – Tuesday 23rd September
Year 8 travelled to Tarporley on Tuesday 23rd September for an 8 team tournament. We were missing a couple of key players with Riley Strachan breaking his leg and captain Nathan Clifton trying to break his. After a quick warm up we took on Abbey Gate College and started strongly, running through phases of controlled rugby and controlling the game well. Unfortunately they tackled well and the game ended 0-0. We then played Tarporley and raised our game winning 5-0. Malbank were next and we kept improving running in 2 tries to win convincingly. Lastly we played the Catholic High School Chester, who were a much stronger unit and proved our biggest challenge. Captain Will Joynson danced and weaved his way through again to give us the lead, only for them to crash through from a close penalty. We attacked strongly again and Josh Hewitt scored in the corner after some quick wide passing. A strangely long game resulted in CHSC eventually equalising and the game finished 10-10. Overall this was a very pleasing result as we were unbeaten and had not conceded a try until the last game. The future is positive with a Saturday tournament at the Vagrants fast approaching on Saturday! Well done year 8!!!
Year 8 – Friday 19th September
Friday 19th Sept – Year 8 welcomed Holmes Chapel and Malbank in a 3 way tournament. We played Holmes Chapel first and we started strongly. Captain Nathan Clifton led the team well and forward Will Joinson was able to run through the defence on numerous occasions. We won 30-10 dominating the play. We then played Malbank after Holmes Chapel had beaten them, expecting an easy win. This was not the case though as Malbank defended well. A strong team performance though broke through the Malbank team, winning 20-0 and head to Tarporley with confidence. Well done Y8!
Year 9 – Thursday 18th September
Thursday 18th Sept – Year 9 visited Tarporley for the annual tournament with a couple of players letting the team down. The rest of the boys really stepped up to the mark, captained by Dan Smith and came away winning 5 games out of 5 and champions. Sam Oakes shone in the backs and Joe Pownall and Tom Fenney strong in the forwards. Lol Muirhead made a strong contribution as stand in flanker. A brilliant start for y9, well done!
Year 10 – Tuesday 16th September
Tuesday 16th Sept – year 10 went to Tarporley High School for their first tournament of the year, against some very strong year 10 teams. The first game we were completely dominant for the majority of the game, attacking wave after wave, but Tarporley defended well and held on for a 0-0 draw. The second game was a different kettle of fish against a very strong Bishop Heber side. Some strong backs play saw Heber win 17-5, despite a strong finish from Brine Leas. The last game saw Weaverham start strongly, scoring first against an off guard BLS defence. We then had the majority of the play, attacking the reds. In the last minute we broke through to score the equaliser for a 5-5 draw. Captain Tom Pemberton organised the team well, with forwards Cal Ford and Jack Deegan leading the forwards. Cai Owen-Ziegenbalg was extremely effective switching to centre and rookie wingers Joe Speetman and Chris Fairfield made an excellent start for the team. A promising start for y10.
Year 11 – Thursday 11th September 2014
Thu 11th Sept – year 11 went to Tarporley High School for the first tournament of the year, boosted by new signing Joe Telfer. The team started very well beating Upton 14-0. Joe, leading the pack and Calum Meakin and Tom Shallcross marshalling the backs. We then beat Abbeygate 21-0 and Tarporley 14-0 with the whole team working together strongly. The final game was against Helsby, who were also unbeaten and we were held to a 0-0 draw despite having the majority of the attacking play. We won overall as Helsby had drawn 2 overall and left Tarporley as champions. The most impressive statistic was that we did not concede a try! This was testament to the strength of the whole team. A fantastic start! Well done year 11!
