The Humanities Area of the curriculum has at its centre a concern with people and their relationship with time, place and beliefs.

…to encourage an understanding of, and to prepare students to participate fully in the human world with its diversity of constraints, opportunities and values. This involves the study of, and encounter with the actions, events, beliefs, environments and institutions which have brought, and are bringing, people into relationships with each other at individual, local, national and global levels.

As a curriculum area we place the child at the centre of everything we do. This is evident by us striving to achieve the following:

  • To help to foster and develop the potential of every child, to the fullest possible extent.
  • To fully develop the students’ confidence in their own abilities.
  • To demonstrate the full potential of the Humanities subjects. To show that each subject is rich, challenging and enjoyable.
  • To develop essential skills and specific knowledge as identified in the National Curriculum, Agreed Syllabus and GCSE syllabi
  • To develop an atmosphere of work and interest within our classes and thereby nurture the self-motivation of our students by maintaining and/or stimulating student curiosity, interest and enjoyment in the Humanities subjects.
  • To help students to develop their own imaginations and show initiative in the solution of problems.
  • To enable students to be able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Wherever possible, to foster relationships with Primary schools, parents, industry and institutions of further education.
  • To be aware of recent development in teaching methods and be willing to change our attitudes and approaches for the benefits of our students.
  • To help our students to gain suitable qualifications for their future lives beyond their school years.
  • To take an interest in each student’s individual development and achieve an informed overview of the student’s progress.
  • Encourage the values and beliefs of good order, politeness and common sense; dealing firmly but fairly with those who seek to undermine the principles behind Positive Schooling.
  • To encourage students respect the religious and moral values of other races, societies and ways of life.
  • To help students understand the world in which they live and the inter-dependence of individuals, groups and nations.
  • To help students to appreciate human achievements and aspirations, and to develop an appreciation and concern for the environment.
