Electronics

Year 7 – Metal Mannaquin

Students are introduced to basic designing and making skills using metal. They design and manufacture an ornamental person, covering the basic skills of cutting, filling, drilling, brazing and painting.

Homework: Drilling safety sheet. Hand tools.

Year 8 Amplifier

Students are introduced to electronics and soldering via assembling an audio amplifier kit. The amplifier will connect to any music source via a jack plug socket. Students will develop their designing skills by designing a 3 Dimensional ‘housing’ for the amplifier

Homework: Electronic components

Year 9 Wobble-Bot

During this project students assemble an ECU (Electronic Control Unit), developing the soldering skills and electronic knowledge from Year 8. The ECU controls the direction and sounds made by the ‘robot’ part of the project. Students learn to program the robot so that it responds to external inputs.

Homework: Electronic components

KS4

Course Name: Electronic Products
Course Number: 4542
Examination Board: AQA

Design and Technology is a practical subject area which requires the application of knowledge, skill and understanding when developing ides, planning, producing products and evaluating them. Skills include designing, making and working with components. Students work with a range of common electrical components, including electronic building blocks, logic and microcontrollers as well as using computer aided design (CAD) and manufacture (CAM).

Career Pathways
A useful platform for further study in apprenticeships and careers in Electrical Engineering. Leads to GCE AS or A Levels Electronics, and then Electrical Engineer, Design Engineer, Electronic Technician, Software Engineer, Robotics, Communications, Research & Development.

Assessment:
Unit 1:
Two hour Written Paper which consists of 40% course mark, taking place in June 2016. Questions based on pre-released material issued by the AQA Board.

Unit 2:
Controlled Assessment which is approximately forty five hours and constitutes 60% of the course mark. This is a single design and make activity selected from a range of tasks set by the AQA board.
