Year 7 – Monster Cushion

In year 7 the students research film animations. They design a film and story and as art of the brief manufacture one of the characters as a monster cushion. The students develop their design and practical skills and develop their own templates using a seam allowance. The students work with a range of modern materials including reflective nylons.

Year 9 – Shoes

In year 9 the students work on a skills based project in preparation for their GCSE folder. We look at fashion and shoes. They focus on a shoe that reflects them. They study the history and development of the shoe and brand. They then develop a range of surface pattern samples using their chosen shoe. Students work in appliqué, patchwork, and fabric printing

Design and Technology is a practical subject area which requires the application of knowledge, skill and understanding when developing ideas, planning, producing products and evaluating them. Students develop an individual style of presentation and project theme. They focus on garment construction and fashion design. In year 10 a short GCSE style project is completed in preparation for year 11. They research a theme and develop through design and samples a final product. Year 11 complete a design folder and final product based on questions set by the exam board.

Career Pathways

Students can study Textiles at A Level. Future careers include fashion designer, textile designer, product developer, pattern cutter, fashion buying, merchandising, marketing, product development, retail and much more.

Assessment:

Unit 1:
Two hour Written Paper which consists of 40% course mark, taking place in June 2016. Questions based on pre-released material issued by the AQA Board.

Unit 2:
Controlled Assessment which is approximately forty five hours and constitutes 60% of the course mark. This is a single design and make activity selected from a range of tasks set by the AQA Board.
